Countdown Crowns Female Champ

Forensic Accountant Fiona Wood, 50, from Kinross made history today on Channel4’s game show Countdown.

In a nail biting Final, Fiona became the first woman to claim the title of ‘Series Champion’ in 26 years. The last female winner was back in 1998.Fiona fought off her opponent Chris Kirby in an incredibly close match, taking it right down to the wire and stealing the show, solving the final conundrum with the word ‘Lassitude’ (a state of physical or mental weariness).

However, there was no lack of energy in the studio as Fiona celebrated becoming the first female champion in decades.

Commenting on her win, Fiona said, “I decided to apply after Colin appealed for older contestants with Susie adding that they wanted more women. I have absolutely no regrets about applying and would encourage other women to give it ago."

Countdown has been on our screens for 42 years. Encouraged by presenters Colin Murray, Susie Dent and Rachel Riley, applications from women have soared recently and show insiders hope that Fiona’s win will encourage even more women to apply for the next series.
