An icon is set to make a sensational return to EastEnders, as Grant Mitchell revisits the BBC soap for its 40th anniversary celebrations.

The BBC has confirmed that the infamous bad boy, away from Walford for eight years, will be returning.

Grant has been at the heart of some of the most unforgettable plots since he first appeared in 1990, including his dynamic partnership with his brother Phil Mitchell, creating the legendary Mitchell brothers.

Adding to the mix, Phil and Grant's old comrade Nigel Bates has made his own dramatic reappearance, stirring curiosity about his personal tribulations. As EastEnders gears up for the February anniversary episodes, showrunners have revealed that Grant will be re-entering the fray amidst the thickening tension between Phil and Nigel.

While specifics remain under wraps, viewers have been promised that the scenes leading up to this milestone will be nothing short of "explosive", Since he last departed to Portugal following the death of their mother Peggy Mitchell in September 2016, Grant has remained abroad.

The prodigal son is slated to reappear for a "short stint" in anticipation of the much-anticipated celebratory episodes.

EastEnders executive producer Chris Clenshaw said he was "absolutely thrilled" to welcome Kemp back, describing Grant as a "legendary role".

"Whilst I'm not currently revealing exactly what brings Grant back to Walford, I can say that his return will play a significant part in the show's 40th anniversary, and will make up many moments of truly unmissable TV."
