Following the launch of series 16 of Waterloo Road on BBC One, the team behind the school drama series unveiled a new storyline that shines a spotlight on the life-threatening risks of severe food allergies.

When young student, Hope Drake (played by Savannah Kunyo), who has a severe allergy to dairy, experiences anaphylaxis at the school, it sends shockwaves through the corridors of Waterloo Road. As the granddaughter to Headteacher Stella Drake (played by Lindsey Coulson), the situation hits painfully close to home for the school’s leadership, forcing both staff and family to confront the realities of food allergy awareness and the need for a prompt emergency response.

The BBC drama which is known for highlighting issues that affect both young teens, as well as families and schools, worked closely with The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, the UK’s food allergy charity, to develop the storyline to ensure it was reflective of the issues of food allergy management in schools and fatal risks of anaphylaxis.

The storyline will air on BBC One next week on Tuesday at 22.40.
